SUMMERPROGRAM
How to launch a truly Catholic Summer Camp
Instructor Retreats
We've discovered the importance of including a retreat or two for the instructors during the summer. Our primary retreat is at the end of our second Planning & Prep week (usually around June 6-9th) at Assateague State Park. This purpose for this retreat is to start the summer off on a spiritual high note while giving the returning and new instructors a chance to get to know each other before camp starts. What we found is that without the retreat, we were often halfway through the summer before everyone really felt comfortable with each other. We head out Friday morning and return late Sunday. A Catholic Church in Ocean City has been kind enough to open their doors so that we may have a private Mass and Adoration Saturday and Sunday mornings. We make sure Christ plays a central role in this retreat. A retreat can be held anywhere, but we believe it's important to get your instructors together for a few days before the first week of classes/camps. Timing is tricky since schools are letting out in early June and high school students are usually finishing exams the first week of June.
Last year we offered our college instructors the opportunity to attend Universitas with the IVE religious order. Summer Program picked up the minimal expense of $75/student plus a donation for gas. It was the first year the IVE ran the retreat, and it was held in mid-May at the base of the Catskill Mountains in New York.
